Dragonblood is a term used for red resins or pigments produced by certain plants, as well as a recurring fictional material in fantasy literature. In botanical and historical contexts, it denotes real resins rather than a single substance.

In botany, the name is most often associated with red resin produced by dragon’s blood trees and related species of Dracaena, notably Dracaena cinnabari of Socotra and Dracaena draco. A separate resin, also called dragon’s blood, is derived from certain rattan palms in the genus Daemonorops; this resin has been used as a dye and varnish for centuries. The resin is obtained by tapping the plant and allowing the sap to harden into a crimson or dark red substance.

Historically, dragon’s blood was traded as a pigment and lacquer, valued for its vivid color and supposed preservative qualities. It appeared in textile dyes, wood finishes, and incense resins, and was present in various traditional medicine systems.
