The term is most commonly encountered in woodworking and cabinetry through the dovetail joint. In this context, pieces of wood are cut so that one portion forms a “tail” and the mating piece forms a corresponding “pin,” producing an interlocking connection that is strong in tension and resistant to being pulled apart.
