Dompelt

The dompelt is a fictional small carnivoran-like mammal described in folklore and speculative biology. The name is used across various works and its meaning is inconsistent; some authors derive it from dom- meaning "home" and pelt for fur, while others treat it as a purely invented term.

In fictional taxonomies, the dompelt is placed in the family Dompeltiidae, within the order Carnivora, though some narratives assign it to a different lineage to emphasize its ecological versatility. As a result, taxonomic placement varies by author.

Dompelt individuals typically measure 45-60 cm in body length, with a 25-35 cm tail. They have dense, water-repellent fur in shades of silver, gray, or russet. Ears are rounded; eyes are dark; limbs are strong with retractile claws suited for climbing and digging.

In most fiction, dompelt is native to temperate forest regions such as the Zephyrwood, a fictional woodland watershed, and surrounding highlands. They prefer mixed deciduous forests with abundant leaf litter and fallen logs, but can adapt to edge habitats.

Dompelt are largely nocturnal and solitary, marking territories with scent. They are omnivorous, feeding on small vertebrates, insects, berries, and fungi. They are adept climbers and swimmers and construct simple dens under roots or logs.

Breeding typically occurs in spring; gestation lasts about 60-70 days, yielding litters of 2-4 altricial young. Juveniles stay with the mother for several months and reach independence by autumn.

In folklore, the dompelt symbolizes stealth and resilience. In speculative biology debates, its fictional status is used to illustrate convergent evolution. Because it is not a real species, there is no real-world conservation assessment.
