Diettrötthet

Diettrötthet, or diet fatigue, refers to a feeling of persistent tiredness and reduced energy that can occur when someone is dieting or restricting caloric intake. It is not a clinical diagnosis but a common symptom reported during weight loss or strict dietary regimens. Diettrötthet can affect physical performance, mood, concentration, and overall daily functioning.

Common symptoms include low energy, reduced exercise tolerance, mental fog or difficulty concentrating, irritability, sleep disturbances, headaches, lightheadedness, and increased cravings. Some individuals may also experience slower recovery after activity or heightened sensitivity to stress.

Causes of diettrötthet are primarily related to an energy deficit relative to the body's needs. Inadequate total calories, imbalanced macronutrients (especially insufficient carbohydrates or protein), and micronutrient deficiencies (such as iron, B vitamins, or vitamin D) can contribute. Dehydration, poor sleep, and high stress levels can worsen fatigue. In athletes, prolonged energy restriction can lead to relative energy deficiency in sport (RED-S), affecting multiple body systems.

Management focuses on restoring energy balance and nutrient adequacy. This includes gradual, sustainable changes to increase caloric intake as needed, distributing meals to ensure regular nutrient supply, and emphasizing a balanced mix of carbohydrates, protein, and fats. Adequate micronutrient intake, hydration, sleep, and stress management are important. Professional guidance from a dietitian or clinician can help tailor a plan. If symptoms persist despite adequate intake, or if there are warning signs such as fainting, palpitations, or rapid weight loss, medical evaluation is recommended to rule out underlying conditions.
