Diabetesype refers to a broad category of metabolic disorders characterized by persistently high blood sugar levels. These conditions arise when the body either doesn't produce enough insulin or cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. Insulin is a hormone that helps glucose from food get into your cells for energy. When glucose remains in the bloodstream, it can lead to serious long-term health complications.

The most common types of diabetes include type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition where the body's immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. This typically develops in childhood or adolescence and requires lifelong insulin therapy. Type 2 diabetes, on the other hand, is characterized by insulin resistance, where the body's cells don't respond properly to insulin, and a relative deficiency in insulin production. It is more prevalent in adults and is often associated with lifestyle factors such as obesity and lack of physical activity, though genetics also plays a role. Gestational diabetes occurs during pregnancy and usually resolves after childbirth, but it increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life for both the mother and the child.

Symptoms of diabetes can vary but often include increased thirst, frequent urination, unexplained weight loss, increased hunger, fatigue, blurred vision, and slow-healing sores. Early diagnosis and effective management, which can involve diet, exercise, medication, and monitoring blood glucose levels, are crucial to prevent or delay the development of diabetes-related complications such as heart disease, kidney disease, nerve damage, and eye problems.
