Diabeetoksessa

Diabeetoksessa is a Finnish term that translates to "diabetes in remission" or "diabetic remission." It refers to a state where the symptoms of diabetes, particularly type 2 diabetes, are significantly reduced or have disappeared, and blood glucose levels are maintained within a non-diabetic range without the need for diabetes medication. This state is typically achieved through substantial lifestyle changes, such as significant weight loss, dietary modifications, and increased physical activity.

Achieving diabetic remission means that while the underlying predisposition to diabetes may still exist, the metabolic dysfunction has been reversed to a point where it no longer requires active medical management. It is not necessarily a permanent cure, and a return to previous lifestyle habits can lead to the re-emergence of diabetes. Remission is most commonly observed in individuals with type 2 diabetes, especially those who have had the condition for a shorter duration and who achieve considerable weight loss.

The definition of diabetic remission can vary slightly among different medical organizations, but generally includes maintaining normal or near-normal blood glucose levels (e.g., HbA1c below 6.5% or 48 mmol/mol) for a sustained period, typically at least six months, without the use of diabetes medications. While spontaneous remission is rare, intentional remission through intensive lifestyle intervention is increasingly recognized as a viable goal for many individuals with type 2 diabetes. Regular monitoring is still advised to detect any relapse.
