Device-as-a-service (DaaS) is a procurement and management model in which an organization leases hardware devices, software, and related services from a provider on a subscription basis. The provider typically handles device procurement, configuration, deployment, ongoing management, security, support, and lifecycle services. It is commonly applied to enterprise IT devices such as laptops, desktops, tablets, and mobile devices.

In DaaS, core components include the devices, the software stack (OS, security and management tools, productivity apps), and services such as deployment, endpoint management, help desk support, security, data protection, and analytics. A central management platform—often integrated with MDM/EMM and IT asset management—enables provisioning, patching, monitoring, and reporting across a device fleet. Pricing is usually a monthly per-device fee that may cover hardware refresh and warranties.

Lifecycle coverage spans procurement, provisioning, ongoing maintenance, updates, and end-of-life handling, including secure data erasure and device replacement. DaaS aims to reduce capital expenditure, standardize configurations, accelerate deployment, and improve security by maintaining up-to-date devices and software.

Risks include vendor lock-in, reliance on service levels, and potentially higher or lower total cost of ownership depending on usage. Data security and privacy are critical, as is ensuring interoperability with existing systems and having a clear exit strategy and data migration plan.

DaaS is widely used in enterprise IT, education, and public sector environments with large, dynamic device fleets. It supports scalable growth, predictable budgeting, and streamlined vendor management, aligning with broader as-a-service and subscription-based models.
