A decathlete is an athlete who competes in the decathlon, a multi-event track and field competition consisting of ten individual contests. The decathlon is one of the oldest and most physically demanding events in athletics, requiring a combination of speed, strength, endurance, and technical skill. It is primarily contested by male athletes, though a women’s version, the heptathlon, exists.

The decathlon was introduced in the modern Olympic Games in 1912 and has remained a staple of the men’s athletics program ever since. Each event carries equal weight in the scoring system, which calculates an athlete’s total score based on performance across all ten contests. The ten events include:

1. 100 meters – a sprint test of speed.

Decathletes undergo rigorous training regimens to excel in all ten events, often balancing strength, speed, and endurance work. The sport demands versatility, as athletes must perform at a high level across disciplines that differ significantly in physical demands. Top decathletes often achieve scores in the 9,000-point range or higher, with elite performances exceeding 9,500 points.

Notable decathletes include American athletes like Dan O’Brien, who holds the world record with 9,026 points, and Roman Sebrle, a Czech competitor who dominated the sport in the early 2000s. The decathlon remains a test of athletic all-round ability, attracting competitors who seek to master multiple facets of track and field.
