Datarommet

Datarommet is a room dedicated to housing information technology equipment used for processing, storing, and routing data. In Norwegian and Danish contexts, datarommet is the term for what English speakers call a server room or data center area. It is typically located within office buildings, campuses, or purpose-built data centers and is designed to provide a controlled environment for IT hardware.

Typical contents include racks with servers, storage arrays, network switches, routers, patch panels, and the cabling that connects them. Electrical infrastructure often comprises uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), power distribution units (PDU), backup generators, and sometimes automatic transfer switches. Cooling is provided by precision air conditioning units and may employ hot-aisle/cold-aisle arrangements or containment. Fire protection and access security are common requirements.

Operational design emphasizes environmental control, reliability, and manageability. Temperature is kept within a narrow range (for example, 18–27 °C) with controlled humidity. Redundancy is typical (N+1 or 2N) to ensure availability. Monitoring systems track temperature, humidity, airflow, power, and equipment faults, with alerting and incident response procedures. Good practices include structured cable management, documented inventory, change control, and regular maintenance.

Context and evolution: In larger organizations datarommet may be part of a dedicated data center, while smaller facilities refer to server rooms. Trends in IT infrastructure include consolidating on-premises equipment, increasing virtualization, and a growing use of cloud services; nevertheless, many organizations keep datarommet for critical systems, backups, or edge computing, often with strict security and compliance requirements.
