DRMteknologi, or digital rights management technology, refers to a set of technical measures designed to control how digital content is used, copied, and distributed after it is purchased or licensed. The goal is to protect intellectual property, prevent unauthorized distribution, and enable monetization models for creators and distributors.

Typically DRM combines content encryption with licensing and device authentication. Content is encrypted and stored or transmitted in an encrypted form; to play it back, a device must obtain a license from a license server, and the playback software or hardware must prove it is authorized. Licenses specify permitted actions, such as the number of plays, expiration, or whether copying is allowed. Some systems bind a license to a particular device or user account.

Common technical components include encryption schemes, key management, trusted hardware or secure enclaves, and sometimes watermarking or fingerprinting for post-distribution traceability. In streaming, standards such as Common Encryption (CENC) enable a single protected stream to be used with multiple DRM systems; major DRM platforms include Widevine, PlayReady, and FairPlay. For physical media, technologies like AACS and BD+ on Blu-ray are analogs.

Applications span video, audio, ebooks, software, and games delivered digitally. DRM can enable authorization models, tiered access, and cross-device entitlements, but it also raises concerns about consumer rights, interoperability, and privacy, and it can complicate service migration or offline use.

The field is shaped by industry practices and legal frameworks that govern circumvention and fair use. Debates focus on balancing copyright protection with user rights, and some advocate alternative models such as open access or less restrictive protections.
