DRMkaitse refers to digital rights management protection used to control access to digital content and software. It comprises technical protections, licensing schemes, and enforcement mechanisms implemented by content creators, publishers, and service providers to enforce terms such as copying, sharing, printing, or modifying material.

Techniques include encryption of files, license servers that verify purchase before granting access, online activation tied to a device, digital watermarking to trace leaks, regional or device-based restrictions, and copy guards embedded in media. Some protections bind content to specific hardware or software ecosystems to limit interoperability.

DRM is deployed across media such as music, films, e-books, software applications, and video games, as well as streaming platforms and app stores. It enables authorization workflows, subscription checks, and usage metering to enforce licenses for single users, families, or enterprises.

Supporters argue DRM helps creators capture revenue, deter piracy, and support licensing models. Critics contend it can impede legitimate use, hamper interoperability and fair use, raise privacy concerns via telemetry, and create vendor lock-in or consumer frustration. In some cases, DRM restrictions hinder resale and portability.

Regulatory regimes, such as those in the European Union and other jurisdictions, often prohibit or restrict circumvention of DRM protections, while also providing exemptions for accessibility, research, or educational use. The balance between protecting rights and user freedom remains contested, leading some platforms to adopt more transparent or user-friendly approaches, or to favor streaming models with reduced or standardized protections.
