DNSSysteme

DNSSysteme is a distributed, open-source DNS management platform designed to provide scalable domain name resolution and administrative control for organizations, service providers, and research networks. The system integrates authoritative server components with a centralized management plane, enabling operators to create and edit zones, manage DNS records, automate updates, and monitor performance and health across a geographically dispersed network.

Architecture comprises an authoritative service cluster, a zone database, a DNSSEC signing/add-on, an API layer, and supporting services for authentication, auditing, and monitoring. Zones can be served from multiple backends, including zone-file stores and database-backed representations. The platform supports high availability through multi-master replication, load balancing, and anycast delivery, which helps reduce latency and improve resilience. Deployment is designed to run in modern cloud environments and containerized platforms.

Key features include dynamic updates, multi-master zone replication, delegation and transfer tooling, DNSSEC signing and key management, support for DNS over TLS and DNS over HTTPS, and a programmable API for automation and integration with configuration management systems. The system adheres to standard DNS protocol definitions (RFCs such as 1034 and 1035) and interoperates with common resolvers and validators.

Security and governance emphasize role-based access control, audit logging, and secure API authentication (TLS, tokens). Operators can implement access controls, track changes through event histories, and enforce compliance policies. The project maintains transparent documentation, contribution guidelines, and an open-source license.

DNSSysteme is used in enterprise networks, hosting ecosystems, and research networks where scalable DNS administration and automation are essential. It aims to provide modular components and strong automation capabilities while remaining protocol-compatible, and it relates closely to established DNS platforms through common standards and workflows.
