DENV2

DENV2 refers to Dengue virus serotype 2, one of the four serotypes of the virus that causes dengue fever. Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne tropical disease. The other serotypes are DENV1, DENV3, and DENV4. Infection with one serotype provides lifelong immunity to that specific serotype but only temporary and partial immunity to the others. This is important because subsequent infections with a different serotype can increase the risk of developing severe dengue, also known as dengue hemorrhagic fever.

DENV2 is a major cause of dengue epidemics worldwide. It is transmitted primarily through the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes, most commonly Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. These mosquitoes typically breed in stagnant water sources around human habitations. Symptoms of DENV2 infection are similar to other dengue serotypes and can range from mild, flu-like illness to severe, life-threatening complications.

Symptoms often include high fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle and joint pains, nausea, vomiting, and rash. In severe cases, DENV2 can lead to dengue hemorrhagic fever, characterized by bleeding, low platelet count, and plasma leakage, or dengue shock syndrome, a potentially fatal condition involving circulatory collapse. Diagnosis is typically made through serological tests or molecular detection of the virus. There is no specific antiviral treatment for dengue, and management focuses on supportive care to alleviate symptoms and manage complications.
