Cysticercoid

Cysticercoid is a larval form of certain tapeworms (class Cestoda) that develops in the body cavity or tissues of small arthropod intermediate hosts. In contrast to the cysticercus, which forms in vertebrate intermediate hosts and contains a fluid-filled vesicle, the cysticercoid is a compact, scolex-bearing larva within a small cyst-like structure. The scolex is already formed inside the cysticercoid and is ready to attach to the intestinal mucosa of its definitive host when released.

Life cycle: In the definitive host, adult tapeworms reside in the small intestine and release eggs within proglottids. Eggs or gravid proglottids reach the environment and are ingested by an arthropod intermediate host (such as fleas, beetles, or crustaceans). Within the arthropod, the oncosphere develops into a cysticercoid. The cycle completes when the arthropod is eaten by a suitable definitive host; the cysticercoid evaginates its scolex and develops into an adult tapeworm in the gut.

Examples and hosts: Dipylidium caninum, the canine and feline tapeworm, uses fleas as intermediate hosts and forms cysticercoids inside them. Hymenolepis diminuta and certain Hymenolepis species use beetles or other arthropods as hosts. In humans, infections with cysticercoid-forming cestodes are uncommon and usually result from accidental ingestion of infected arthropods or contaminated food; clinical symptoms are typically mild.

Diagnosis and treatment: Diagnosis of cysticercoid-based infections relies on identification of the adult worm or eggs in the definitive host, or detection of the parasite in the environment or intermediate host in zoonotic cycles. In clinical human cases, treatment follows standard cestocide regimens (for example praziquantel or niclosamide) to eliminate the adult tapeworm.
