Cumplieras are a type of decorative ceramic tile traditionally used in Spain and Latin America. These tiles are typically handmade and feature intricate designs, often depicting floral motifs, geometric patterns, or scenes from daily life. The term "cumpliera" itself is thought to derive from a Spanish word relating to fulfillment or completion, perhaps alluding to the way these tiles were used to complete or enhance architectural features.

Historically, cumplieras were employed for a variety of purposes. They adorned the facades of buildings, adding color and visual interest to otherwise plain walls. Inside homes, they were frequently found in kitchens and bathrooms, serving as durable and decorative backsplashes or wainscoting. Their glazed surfaces made them easy to clean, a practical consideration for these high-traffic areas.

The production of cumplieras involves skilled artisans who employ traditional techniques. Clay is shaped, dried, and then fired in kilns. The designs are applied by hand using various methods, including painting with colored glazes or sgraffito, where a layer of glaze is scratched away to reveal a different color underneath. The firing process fuses the glazes to the ceramic, creating a durable and vibrant finish. While mass-produced tiles are now more common, handmade cumplieras continue to be appreciated for their unique artistry and cultural significance.
