Cuffskader

Cuffskader is a term used in Dutch to refer to injuries of the rotator cuff, a group of four tendons and muscles that stabilize the shoulder joint. Causes include acute tears from falls or lifting, and degenerative wear with aging; repetitive overhead activities can contribute.

Symptoms typically include shoulder pain, especially with lifting or lying on the affected side, weakness, reduced ability to abduct the arm, and nighttime pain. Diagnosis is based on clinical examination and specific tests (for example the Neer or Hawkins-Kennedy tests), supported by imaging such as ultrasound or MRI to assess tear size and location. Classification distinguishes partial-thickness and full-thickness tears, as well as tendinopathy without a discrete tear.

Treatment options range from non-surgical measures (rest or activity modification, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and targeted physical therapy) to corticosteroid injections for short-term relief. Surgical repair or debridement, usually performed arthroscopically, is considered for persistent symptoms or large full-thickness tears.

Recovery depends on tear size and patient factors but commonly involves structured physical therapy for several months; partial tears may heal with conservative care, while repaired tears often require months of rehabilitation. Prognosis is generally favorable for many patients, with better outcomes in smaller tears and with adherence to rehabilitation.

Prevention focuses on conditioning, proper warm-up, addressing shoulder mechanics, and avoiding repetitive overhead strain.
