Crosscentered

Crosscentered (also written cross-centered) is an adjective used to describe theological approaches, preaching styles, or spiritual emphases that place the crucified Jesus at the center of the Christian faith. The term is commonly found in evangelical and Reformed contexts and is used to signal a particular hermeneutical and pastoral priority.

In practice, cross-centered preaching or teaching foregrounds the significance of Jesus’s death and resurrection for salvation, forgiveness of sins, and reconciliation with God. Proponents argue that the gospel is best understood through the lens of the cross, in which faith is received by grace and transformation flows from that event. Doctrines, exhortations, and mission are framed by this central event, and biblical interpretation is guided by the conviction that Scripture ultimately points to Christ.

Historical roots of the idea lie in Pauline theology, which emphasizes Christ crucified as the core message of the gospel, and in the Protestant Reformation, which highlighted justification by faith and the sufficiency of Christ’s work. In modern church life, cross-centered or gospel-centered movements seek to reframe Christian living around the person and work of Jesus rather than focusing solely on moral example or self-improvement.

Critiques and balance: some scholars caution that a strictly cross-centered framing can risk depriving other biblical themes—such as creation, sanctification, or social ethics—of emphasis. Proponents typically respond that the cross provides the overarching framework within which all other topics are understood. Effective cross-centered ministry often aims to integrate personal conversion with discipleship, worship, and communal life.
