Coscinasterias

Coscinasterias is a genus of starfish in the family Asteriidae. These marine invertebrates are primarily found in temperate and subtropical waters around the world, with a range of species distributed across the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans.

Coscinasterias species are typically characterized by their rounded or slightly irregular body shape, with five arms radiating from a central disk. The arms can vary in length and width, depending on the species, and often feature a pattern of darker markings or spots. The skin of Coscinasterias starfish is usually relatively thick and tough, providing some degree of protection against predators.

The diet of Coscinasterias species consists mainly of slow-moving marine animals, such as mussels, clams, and snails. These starfish feed on their prey by using their sharp, tooth-like structures called pedicellariia to scrape loose flesh and other edible matter. They often target individual animals, rather than grazing on sediment or other surfaces.

Coscinasterias species tend to live in areas with a rocky or stone substrate, where they can easily access a wide range of potential food sources. Some species can even be found in intertidal zones, where regular exposure to air and fluctuating water levels is common.
