Corespun

Core-spun yarn, or corespun, is a type of yarn in which a central core fiber is encased by a sheath of one or more fibers. The design combines the strength, stiffness, or elasticity of the core with the surface properties of the sheath, such as softness, appearance, or texture.

Construction: The core can be a continuous filament or staple fiber made from polyester, nylon, aramid, cotton, or blends. The sheath consists of one or more fibers that wrap around the core, typically via wrap spinning or a similar twisting process. Some corespun constructions use an elastane or other elastic core to impart stretch, particularly in hosiery or activewear applications.

Manufacturing: Core-spun yarns are produced by wrapping a core fiber with a covering fiber while applying twist to form a single yarn. The wrapping can be done to produce even coverage or selective coverage, affecting the hand, luster, and bulk of the final yarn. The length and twist level influence properties such as strength, elongation, and abrasion resistance.

Properties and uses: Core-spun yarns exhibit high tensile strength and abrasion resistance, with the sheath providing a desired hand and appearance. They are used in sewing threads, upholstery and woven fabrics, tire cords and industrial cords, geotextiles, and some sportswear or elastic fabrics. In many cases, the core provides dimensional stability and stretch, while the sheath controls texture and finish.

Variations: Core-spun yarns may be multi-component, with more than one core or multiple sheath layers, to tailor performance for specific end-uses.
