Corellas

Corellas are a group of medium-sized parrots native to Australia and nearby islands, primarily found in arid and semi-arid regions. They belong to the genus *Cacatua*, which also includes cockatoos, and are closely related to species like the sulphur-crested cockatoo and the galah. The term "corella" is sometimes used informally to refer to several species within this group, though the name is most commonly associated with the little corella (*Cacatua sanguinea*) and the long-billed corella (*Cacatua tenuirostris*).

Corellas are characterized by their white plumage, often with shades of yellow, pink, or orange on their crests and faces, depending on the species. Their beaks are relatively slender compared to other cockatoos, and their tails are long and graduated. They are highly social birds, often seen in large flocks, and are known for their loud, raucous calls, which can be both a source of enjoyment and a nuisance to humans living in close proximity to their habitats.

Little corellas are the most widespread and adaptable of the group, thriving in urban areas as well as remote outback regions. They are omnivorous, feeding on seeds, fruits, insects, and sometimes human food scraps. Long-billed corellas, on the other hand, are more specialized, primarily feeding on seeds and grains, and are often found in drier, more arid environments.

Corellas play an important ecological role in their habitats, helping to disperse seeds and control insect populations. However, their adaptability has also led to conflicts with humans, as they can cause damage to crops and infrastructure. In some areas, they are considered pests, leading to efforts to manage their populations through culling or habitat modification.

Due to their intelligence and social nature, corellas are sometimes kept as pets, though they require significant attention and mental stimulation. Their lifespan in captivity can exceed 50 years, making them a long-term commitment for owners. Conservation efforts are in place to protect wild corella populations, particularly in regions where habitat loss and climate change pose threats to their survival.
