Cordimpressed is a decorative technique used in crafts such as ceramics, leatherworking, and bookbinding, in which cords or strings are pressed into a pliable surface to leave continuous lines, knots, or geometric patterns. The resulting impressions create a tactile texture and rhythmic pattern that can be combined with glaze, paint, or ink.

Etymology: The term combines cord, from Old English cord or from Latin chorda, meaning rope or cord, with impressed, meaning pressed into a surface; it is used descriptively in craft discourse rather than as a strict technical designation.

Technique: In ceramics, cordimpressed decoration is made by smoothing a clay body, laying cords across the surface, and pressing them lightly with a tool to transfer the pattern; the cords may be tied or knotted to produce repeated motifs. The surface can be left matte or can be burnished before firing. In leather or paper, cords are embedded or pressed into the surface while pliable, then the material is finished by dyeing, painting, or varnishing.
