Contextdependent (often written context-dependent) describes phenomena whose interpretation, function, or outcome hinges on surrounding conditions or context. The label is used across disciplines to distinguish between effects that vary with situation and those that would occur identically regardless of context.

In linguistics and semantics, context dependence is central to indexicals and deictic expressions such as this, that, here, and now, whose reference shifts with speaker, place, and time. Context also shapes truth conditions and meaning, as background knowledge and surrounding discourse influence interpretation.

In psychology, context-dependent processes help explain variability in perception, memory, and decision making. Context-dependent memory refers to improved recall when retrieval occurs in the same context as encoding.
