Computermonitorers are display devices that connect to computers to provide a visual interface for software, video, and text. They render electronic signals from a computer into images on a flat panel, enabling interaction through graphical user interfaces and multimedia output.

Historically, monitors evolved from cathode-ray tubes to flat-panel displays. LCDs with backlighting became dominant in the late 20th century, followed by LED-backlit LCDs and, in higher-end models, OLED panels. Common sizes range from about 21 to 32 inches, with ultrawide formats exceeding 34 inches. Panel technologies include IPS, VA, and TN, each offering different advantages in color accuracy, contrast, viewing angles, and response time.

Key specifications describe how a monitor behaves in use. Resolution (such as 1080p, 1440p, or 4K), aspect ratio (commonly 16:9 or wider 21:9), pixel density, refresh rate (60 Hz to 240 Hz), and response time influence image quality and motion clarity. Color depth and gamut (for example sRGB or Adobe RGB) determine color richness and accuracy. Video interfaces—VGA, DVI, HDMI, DisplayPort, and increasingly USB-C—carry signals and power. VESA mounting standards enable wall or arm mounting for ergonomic setups.

Usage considerations cover productivity, gaming, or professional color work. Color-critical tasks benefit from hardware calibration and color-management tools. Ergonomics matter: adjustable height, tilt, swivel, and pivot reduce strain. Energy efficiency remains a priority, with modern monitors designed to minimize power consumption.
