Closets

A closet is a recessed storage space built into a wall or a freestanding cabinet used to store clothing, linens, and other household items. In modern construction, closets are typically integrated into the structure, while wardrobes offer portable storage options. Closets vary from shallow reach-ins to large walk-in configurations.

Common configurations include reach-in, walk-in, and freestanding wardrobes. A reach-in closet is shallow and usually features a single hanging rod with adjustable shelves. A walk-in closet provides a room-like space with multiple hanging zones, shelves, drawers, and footwear storage. A wardrobe, or armoire, is a freestanding cabinet that serves as a closet.

Interior components include hanging rods, shelves, drawers, shoe racks, and organizers. Doors may be hinged and swing outward, slide on tracks, bi-fold, or be pocket doors that disappear into the wall. Lighting and ventilation are often added to improve visibility and air flow.

Materials range from solid wood and plywood to particleboard with laminates or veneers. Many closets use modular systems with adjustable shelves and rods to maximize space, and finishes can be natural wood tones, white, or colored laminates.

Design and planning focus on efficient use of space, accessibility, and durability. Depths, heights, and door clearances influence layout, and zoning helps separate daily garments from seasonal or infrequently used items. The term closet historically referred to a private, enclosed storage space and its usage varies by region.
