Cervixudvidelse, also known as cervical dilation, refers to the opening or widening of the cervix, the lower, narrow part of the uterus that opens into the vagina. This process is a natural and essential part of childbirth, allowing the fetus to pass from the uterus into the birth canal. Cervical dilation is typically measured in centimeters, from 0 (closed) to 10 (fully dilated).

During labor, hormonal changes and uterine contractions cause the cervix to efface (thin out) and dilate. This dilation is a gradual process that can take many hours, especially for first-time mothers. Factors such as the strength and frequency of contractions, the baby's position, and the mother's individual anatomy can influence the rate of dilation.
