Carpet is a textile floor covering made from fibers such as nylon, polyester, wool, or olefin, which are tufted or woven into a backing. The face fibers create a surface pile that determines texture, density, and feel underfoot. Common carpet styles include cut pile (plush, Saxony, textured) and loop pile (Berber, level loop), each offering different aesthetics and performance. Installation methods vary. Wall-to-wall carpets are typically stretched over padding and secured with tackless strips or adhesives, while carpet tiles provide modular installation and easier replacement. Underlay or padding enhances comfort, sound insulation, and longevity.

Carpeted floors influence several design and functional aspects. They provide warmth and cushioning, contribute to acoustic dampening, and affect room acoustics and perceived space. Color, pattern, and pile height can alter the room’s mood and maintenance requirements. For allergy considerations, carpet selection and cleaning routines are important, as fibers and dust can accumulate.

Maintenance generally includes regular vacuuming, prompt stain treatment, and periodic professional cleaning. Durability depends on fiber type, pile height and density, carpet construction, and level of foot traffic. Replacing or refreshing carpeted areas is common in interiors undergoing renovation or changing design trends.
