Carbonen

Carbonen is a term used in theory to describe a class of carbon-based materials and species with potentially diverse structures. It is not a formally recognized compound or element, and there is no consensus on a single definition. In speculative discussions, carbonen refers to extended carbon networks that may include a mix of sp2 and sp3 bonds, or cage-like motifs, with tunable properties through composition and structure.

In these models, carbonen can assume several motifs, including diamond-like three-dimensional lattices, layered graphene-like sheets with interlayer linkages, or hollow cages analogous to fullerenes. Predicted properties vary with structure but commonly include high stiffness and low density, chemical inertness relative to many substances, and a wide range of possible electronic behaviors from insulating to metallic depending on bonding patterns. Thermal conductivity is often expected to be high, and chemical reactivity may be controlled by surface terminations or dopants.

No experimental synthesis has been demonstrated to date. Computational studies and high-pressure simulations have explored metastable forms that might be recoverable under certain conditions. Proposed synthesis routes include extreme-pressure formation, high-temperature stabilization, or novel deposition techniques, but practical realization remains uncertain.

If realized, carbonen could have applications in advanced materials, including ultra-light composites, high-performance electronic or energy-storage systems, and protective coatings. Realization challenges include stabilizing the structures at ambient conditions, controlling defects, and scalable production.
