Extreme pressure refers to pressures far above ambient conditions, typically beginning in the gigapascal range. It is used in geoscience, materials science, and high-pressure chemistry to study matter under conditions found in planetary interiors or to explore new material phases.

Generation and measurement of extreme pressure rely on specialized equipment. The diamond anvil cell (DAC) can compress millimeter- to submillimeter-scale samples to hundreds of gigapascals, often with laser or resistive heating to reach high temperatures. Multi-anvil presses enable larger samples at similar pressures and are widely used for materials research. In natural settings, extreme pressures arise during planetary formation and within the cores of rocky planets and gas giants.

Under extreme pressure, atomic arrangements and electronic structures can change dramatically. Phase transitions, metallization of insulators, and the formation of superhard or novel crystalline phases are common. Materials may exhibit altered electrical, magnetic, and optical properties, and new compounds can emerge that are not stable at ambient pressures.

High-pressure research has led to insights into metallic hydrogen, superconductivity under compression, and the synthesis of dense carbon allotropes and other hydrides. Methods such as X-ray diffraction, spectroscopy, and in situ imaging under pressure are used to characterize structure and properties, contributing to theories of matter at extreme densities and guiding development of advanced materials.
