Allotropes are different structural forms of the same chemical element in the same physical state. They arise when the element can bond or arrange its atoms in more than one stable way, yielding distinct materials with different properties. Allotropy is common among elements like carbon, sulfur, phosphorus, and oxygen, and is influenced by factors such as temperature and pressure.

Carbon exhibits several well-known allotropes. Diamond features a three-dimensional network of strong covalent bonds, giving exceptional hardness and an insulative character. Graphite consists of layered planes of carbon atoms with weaker interlayer forces, providing electrical conductivity along the planes and lubricating properties. Other carbon allotropes include graphene, carbon nanotubes, and fullerenes, which have unique electrical, mechanical, and chemical properties.

Oxygen and sulfur provide contrasting examples. Oxygen has at least two gaseous allotropes: O2, the familiar molecule that sustains combustion and respiration, and O3, ozone, a more reactive form encountered in the upper atmosphere and also at ground level in some pollution contexts. Sulfur has solid allotropes such as rhombic and monoclinic forms of S8, with red and plastic sulfur representing polymeric or modified structures produced under different conditions.

Phosphorus has several allotropes, including white, red, and black (and violet) varieties, each with distinct bonding and properties. All allotropes may exhibit markedly different chemical reactivities, colors, mechanical properties, and electrical behaviors, illustrating how bonding and geometry govern material character.

Allotropy is distinct from isotopes, which differ in neutron number, and from isomers, which are different arrangements of atoms within distinct molecules. It highlights how the same element can form diverse materials under varying conditions.
