Lubricating is the process of applying a lubricant to surfaces in relative motion to reduce friction, wear, and heat. Proper lubrication forms a protective film that minimizes metal-to-metal contact, facilitates smooth movement, and extends the life of bearings, gears, and other moving parts. It also helps seal out contaminants and carry away debris.

Lubricants come in several forms. Oils (mineral and synthetic) are liquid lubricants that separate surfaces and can carry away heat. Greases are thickened oils that remain in place, providing lasting lubrication in low-speed or heavy-load applications. Solid lubricants such as graphite or molybdenum disulfide can function where liquids are ineffective or undesirable.

Lubrication mechanisms include hydrodynamic and elastohydrodynamic film formation, where relative motion and rotation generate a moving lubricant film; boundary lubrication, where additives form protective layers on surfaces; and, in some systems, hydrostatic or self-contained pressure lubrication. The choice depends on load, speed, temperature, geometry, and whether a continuous supply is feasible.

Selecting a lubricant requires matching viscosity to operating conditions, considering temperature, load, speed, and clearance. Additives improve oxidation resistance, anti-wear performance, corrosion protection, and cleanliness. System cleanliness and seals influence lubricant life; contamination, water ingress, or oxidation can shorten service intervals.

Maintenance involves regular monitoring of lubricant condition, following manufacturer recommendations for change intervals, and ensuring correct application. Practices include keeping reservoirs clean, using compatible lubricants, and avoiding cross-contamination. Safety and environmental concerns include proper handling, spill control, and disposal, with special care for fire hazards when dealing with flammable oils.
