The genus is small and currently contains one living representative, Callorhinus ursinus, the northern fur seal. Members of this genus are characterized by robust bodies, thick insulating fur, and pronounced sexual dimorphism, with adult males markedly larger and often sporting a mane of longer fur around the neck.
