Bursasakkuloita

Bursasakkuloita, also known as bursal sacs, are small, fluid-filled sacs located near joints and in areas where tendons and muscles glide over bones. Their primary function is to reduce friction and cushion the impact between these moving parts, allowing for smooth and effortless joint movement. These bursae are lined with a synovial membrane, which secretes synovial fluid, a lubricating substance.

There are numerous bursae throughout the body, with some of the most commonly affected being in the shoulder, elbow, hip, and knee. Inflammation of a bursa is called bursitis. Bursitis can be caused by overuse, repetitive motions, direct trauma, or underlying medical conditions like arthritis or gout. Symptoms of bursitis typically include pain, tenderness, stiffness, and swelling in the affected area. The pain may worsen with movement or pressure.

Diagnosis of bursitis usually involves a physical examination and a review of the patient's medical history. In some cases, imaging tests such as X-rays, ultrasound, or MRI may be used to rule out other conditions and assess the extent of the inflammation. Treatment for bursitis often focuses on relieving pain and inflammation. This can include rest, ice application, medication such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and physical therapy. In more severe or persistent cases, corticosteroid injections or aspiration of the excess fluid from the bursa may be necessary. Surgical intervention is rarely required but may be considered for chronic or complicated cases.
