In marine engineering and robotics, buoyancy-assisted concepts are central to ballast systems and variable buoyancy devices. Submarines, remotely operated vehicles, and autonomous underwater vehicles adjust buoyancy with ballast tanks or pumps to ascend, descend, or hover with minimal propulsion, increasing efficiency and stealth. Buoyancy aids are also used in training and sport to assist learners with balance and propulsion in water.

Safety and reliability depend on integrated sensing and control to prevent unwanted accelerations or depth changes.
