Breukvastheid

Breukvastheid, often translated as fracture toughness, is a material property that describes its resistance to fracture when a crack is present. It quantifies the amount of energy a material can absorb before it breaks. This property is crucial in engineering design, particularly for components that are subjected to stress and may contain flaws or defects. A material with high breukvastheid can tolerate larger cracks without failing compared to a material with low breukvastheid.

The measurement of breukvastheid typically involves testing a specimen with a pre-existing crack. Common testing methods include the Charpy impact test and the Izod impact test, which measure the energy absorbed during fracture. Another important measure is the fracture toughness parameter, KIC, which represents the stress intensity factor at the point of rapid crack propagation for a material under plane strain conditions.

Breukvastheid is influenced by several factors, including the material's composition, microstructure, temperature, and the presence of defects. For instance, materials with a ductile microstructure generally exhibit higher breukvastheid than brittle materials. Understanding and characterizing breukvastheid allows engineers to select appropriate materials for specific applications and to design structures that are resistant to catastrophic failure. It is a key consideration in industries such as aerospace, automotive, and civil engineering.
