BreakoutSitzungen are smaller, parallel discussion groups that form within a larger meeting to address specific topics or tasks. They are commonly used in conferences, workshops, corporate strategy sessions, and agile planning events to increase participation, focus discussion, and accelerate output. The term combines the English “breakout” with the German “Sitzung” (meeting or session).

Typically, a breakout session begins with a clear objective and a defined topic. Participants are divided into groups of a manageable size, often 4 to 8 people, and each group is facilitated by a designated moderator. Timeboxing is common, with sessions lasting from 15 to 60 minutes. Groups work on topic questions, develop ideas, or produce concrete outputs, which are then captured in notes or slides. At the end of the period, groups reconvene in the main session to report their results and discuss implications for the overall agenda. In virtual formats, breakout rooms and shared documents or templates support collaboration and documentation.

Outputs from BreakoutSitzungen typically include summarized findings, proposed actions, decision recommendations, and assigned responsibilities. The results are then integrated into the larger meeting’s next steps, with follow-up tasks tracked after the event.
