Bracesystemen, often referred to as orthodontic braces, are dental appliances used to correct misalignments in teeth and jaws. The primary goal of braces is to improve oral health, function, and aesthetics by guiding teeth into their proper positions. This process is typically overseen by an orthodontist.

The most common type of braces consists of brackets, which are small, square pieces attached to the front surface of each tooth. A wire, known as an archwire, is threaded through these brackets. This archwire is held in place by elastic bands or small metal ties. The orthodontist periodically tightens or adjusts the archwire, applying gentle pressure to gradually move the teeth. This movement is facilitated by the body's natural bone remodeling process.

Different types of braces exist to cater to various needs and preferences. Traditional metal braces are highly effective and durable. Ceramic braces offer a more discreet option as their brackets are tooth-colored. Lingual braces are placed on the back of the teeth, making them virtually invisible from the outside. While these variations exist, the fundamental principle of applying controlled pressure to move teeth remains the same.

The duration of treatment with braces varies significantly, typically ranging from several months to a few years. This depends on the complexity of the misalignment, the patient's age, and their adherence to the orthodontist's instructions, including wearing elastics and maintaining good oral hygiene. Regular check-ups are crucial to monitor progress and make necessary adjustments. Once treatment is complete, patients often wear a retainer to maintain the corrected position of their teeth.
