Anicius Manlius Severinus Boëthius, commonly known as Boëthius, was a Roman senator, consul, magister officiorum, and philosopher of the early 6th century AD. He is considered one of the last great thinkers of classical antiquity and a pivotal figure in the preservation of Latin learning during the early Middle Ages. Born into the aristocratic Anicii family in Rome, Boëthius received an excellent education and quickly rose to prominence in the Ostrogothic Kingdom of Italy, serving under King Theodoric the Great.
