Providence, Rhode Island, is the capital and most populous city of the U.S. state of Rhode Island, located in the New England region. It was founded in 1636 by Roger Williams and named after the protection local settlers attributed to divine providence. The area was first known as Providence Plantations and was incorporated as a city in 1832.
