Biopsieproben are small pieces of tissue or cells taken from the body for examination under a microscope. This process, known as a biopsy, is a crucial diagnostic tool in medicine. Doctors order biopsies to investigate abnormalities detected through imaging scans, physical examinations, or laboratory tests. The primary goal of examining a biopsy sample is to determine whether diseased cells, such as cancerous cells, are present.

The collection of a biopsy sample can be performed in several ways. Needle biopsies involve using a thin needle to extract a small amount of tissue. Surgical biopsies involve removing a larger portion of tissue, sometimes an entire lump or abnormal area. Endoscopic biopsies are taken during procedures like colonoscopies or bronchoscopies, where a flexible tube with a camera and instruments is inserted into the body.

Once collected, the biopsy specimen is sent to a pathology laboratory. There, trained pathologists prepare and examine the sample. They may use various staining techniques to highlight specific cellular structures and identify any abnormalities. The pathologist's report provides essential information to the treating physician, guiding diagnosis, treatment decisions, and prognosis.

Biopsies are not limited to cancer diagnosis. They are also used to identify inflammatory conditions, infections, and other diseases affecting various organs and tissues. The information gained from a biopsy is often indispensable for accurate diagnosis and effective patient management.
