Bilfabrikker are industrial facilities where passenger cars and, in some cases, commercial vehicles are manufactured and assembled from components supplied by suppliers. The plant combines stamping, body assembly, painting, and final assembly into a continuous manufacturing process. Modern bilfabrikker emphasize flexibility to produce different models on shared platforms and to integrate electric propulsion systems.

The concept began in the early 20th century with mass production, most famously illustrated by Ford's moving assembly line, which reduced costs and enabled large-scale output. A typical production sequence includes sheet-metal stamping of panels, body-in-white assembly (welding and joining of panels), paint shop, powertrain installation, electrical systems, interior fitting, and final assembly with testing and quality checks. Sub-assemblies like engines, gearboxes, and electronics are often sourced from suppliers or other plants. Lean manufacturing and automation, including robotics and conveyors, aim to reduce waste and cycle time.

Bilfabrikker are distributed globally and are usually located near suppliers, ports, and skilled labor markets. Production is shaped by supply-chain management, just-in-time delivery, and platform-based design that allows multiple models to share components. Current trends include electrification, battery-pack integration, modular platforms, digitalization, and increased automation balanced with human labor for complex tasks. Environmental standards and energy efficiency drive changes in paint shops, waste handling, and overall plant design.

Car factories serve as major employers and regional economic anchors, requiring substantial investment and skilled labor. They interact with suppliers, training institutions, and local communities while adapting to regulatory regimes and market demand.
