Bilanssi

Bilanssi is a term used in Finnish to denote balance or balance sheet, and more generally any state of balance between opposing elements. In accounting, bilanssi most commonly refers to the balance sheet, a financial statement that shows a company’s assets, liabilities and shareholders’ equity at a specific date. The balance sheet reflects the accounting equation: assets equal liabilities plus equity, and it is used to assess solvency, liquidity and financial position. Bilanssi is typically prepared annually and may accompany other financial statements such as the income statement and cash flow statement.

In corporate reporting, bilanssi provides a snapshot of what the company owns and owes, as well as the residual interest of the owners. It is used by management, investors, lenders and regulators to evaluate financial stability and capital structure, and it often serves as a basis for financial analysis, ratios and benchmarking.

In energy and utility contexts, bilanssi describes the balancing of supply and demand in real time. Market participants forecast consumption and production, and deviations are reconciled through a balancing mechanism. Balancing activities help maintain grid stability, and imbalances can lead to charges or credits according to the rules established by the system operator or market regulator.

More broadly, bilanssi can denote any equilibrium between two sides, such as budgeting a bilanssi between income and expenses or balancing resources and needs in planning. The term is widely used in Finnish and appears in various Nordic-language contexts as part of everyday accounting and economic vocabulary.
