Bagalamukhi is a lesser-known but significant deity in Hindu mythology, primarily worshipped in the northern regions of India, particularly in states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal. She is often revered as one of the 18 or 21 Matrikas, a group of divine mother goddesses associated with various aspects of creation, preservation, and destruction. Bagalamukhi is particularly linked to the removal of obstacles, the granting of eloquence, and the protection against enemies.

In iconography, Bagalamukhi is typically depicted as a beautiful woman with four arms. She holds a lotus in one hand, a noose in another, and a garland in a third, while her fourth hand is raised in a gesture of blessing or protection. Her complexion is often described as golden or radiant, and she is sometimes shown riding a lion or a peacock. Her name, derived from Sanskrit, translates roughly to "she who has a garland" or "she who removes obstacles," reflecting her role in dispelling hindrances.

Worship of Bagalamukhi is particularly associated with the removal of speech-related obstacles, making her a patron deity for orators, poets, and those seeking clarity in communication. Devotees pray to her for success in exams, legal battles, and other situations where eloquence and persuasive speech are crucial. Her temple in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, is one of the most prominent places of worship dedicated to her.

Bagalamukhi is also linked to the Puranas, ancient Hindu scriptures, where she is described as a manifestation of the divine feminine energy (Shakti).
