Backstage management is the coordination of non-public operations and personnel that support live performances and events. It covers the organization and execution of all activities that occur behind the stage, in the wings, and in load areas to ensure performances run safely, on time, and in alignment with artistic intent.

Core functions include supervision of stage crew, cueing and timing, prop handling, set changes, wardrobe management, and the coordination of lighting and sound cues during performances. It also encompasses safety oversight, risk assessment, backstage access control, and the maintenance of clear communication between performers, designers, and front-of-house staff.

Key roles typically include the stage manager as the central coordinator responsible for the run of the show, cueing, and calling the performance. Assistants support setup and rehearsals. The prop master, wardrobe supervisor, and deck supervisor manage their respective resources, while a production manager handles scheduling, budgeting, and logistics.

Common processes and artifacts include pre-production planning, technical rehearsals, load-in and load-out, and the run of show. Documentation such as cue sheets, call sheets, rehearsal notes, and incident logs is maintained, along with safety plans, contingency procedures, and communication protocols to enable rapid response to issues.

Backstage management is used across theatre, concerts, and live events, and shares overlapping practices with production management in film and television. The discipline emphasizes organization, communication, and problem-solving under pressure to support a successful performance.
