BIOS updates are firmware updates for a computer’s motherboard firmware. They update the BIOS or UEFI to fix bugs, improve hardware compatibility, address security vulnerabilities, and add features. Updates are provided by motherboard or system vendors and are specific to a model.

The BIOS or UEFI initializes hardware during the boot process, configures low-level hardware, and provides runtime interfaces used by the operating system. It controls settings such as boot order, CPU and memory initialization, and power management.

Reasons to update include support for newer CPUs, RAM, PCIe devices, and improved power management; bug fixes; and security patches. Some updates also introduce new features such as enhanced fan control, faster boot times, or added boot options. It is generally advised to update only when there is a clear benefit for the hardware or software environment.

Update methods vary: some vendors offer update utilities that run within Windows or Linux; others require creating a bootable USB drive with a flashing tool and the BIOS image. The update file must match the exact motherboard model and revision, and instructions from the vendor should be followed precisely. It is common to verify the file’s integrity with checksums and to download only from official sources.

Risks include the possibility of rendering the motherboard nonfunctional if the flashing process is interrupted or the wrong file is used. Always use a reliable power source, such as an uninterruptible power supply, and follow official instructions. After a successful update, BIOS settings may reset to defaults and require reconfiguration. Check the BIOS version and hardware recognition during the first boot after the update.
