Autotallien is a term used in speculative biology and science fiction to describe a hypothetical lineage of tall, autotrophic organisms. The name combines auto- for self and -tallien as a generic suffix for a taxonomic group. Autotallien are envisioned as primary producers capable of sustaining themselves without consuming organic material from other organisms, instead deriving energy from light through photosynthesis or from inorganic chemical sources in chemosynthesis.

Morphology and physiology are described as tall, slender or columnar forms, often with extensive surface areas for light capture, such as frond-like appendages or leaf-like sheets. Skeletons may be rigid or flexible; growth patterns favor vertical expansion in low-gravity or stable environments. They may possess vascular-like transport networks to move water and nutrients along long distances.

Ecology and environment: Habitat hypotheses include exoplanetary canopies with high irradiance, strong wind, and nutrient transport challenges, or atmospheric and aquatic settings where buoyancy supports tall forms. Energy balance requirements demand a reliable light source and adequate inorganic nutrient supply, shaping potential interactions with other producers, consumers, and decomposers within their ecosystems.

Role in science and literature: Since there is no evidence for such organisms, autotallien are used as thought experiments in teaching about autotrophy, scaling laws, and planet habitability. They appear in worldbuilding projects and speculative biology discussions as a way to explore how body size, energy capture, and environmental constraints interact.
