Autoratiivinen

Autoratiivinen is a Finnish adjective that describes a person, style, or system as authoritative, having a strong command of knowledge or authority, or functioning with an authoritative or autocratic manner. The word derives from the noun autoriteetti, which comes from the Latin root auctor (author). In Finnish, the suffix –inen turns nouns into adjectives, so autoratiivinen literally means “involved with authority” or “authoritatively”.

In everyday use, autoratiivinen can refer to a speaker whose tone convinces listeners because of expertise, such as a professor who presents research with confidence. It can also describe a governing body or policy that centralizes power, as in discussions of autoritatiivinen hallinto (authoritarian administration). The term is often contrasted with democratic or populist approaches, especially in political science literature that examines the balance between authority and participation in Finland.
