Automaatioelementit, often translated as automation elements or components, are the fundamental building blocks used in automation systems. These are standardized devices or modules that perform specific functions within a larger automated process. They can range from simple sensors and actuators to more complex programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and human-machine interfaces (HMIs). The purpose of these elements is to enable machines and systems to operate with a reduced level of human intervention.

Sensors are a common type of automation element. They detect physical conditions such as temperature, pressure, position, or light, and convert this information into electrical signals. Actuators, conversely, take electrical signals and convert them into physical actions, such as opening or closing a valve, moving a robotic arm, or activating a motor. PLCs are the brains of many automation systems, programmed to receive input from sensors, process this information according to predefined logic, and send output signals to actuators. HMIs provide a user interface, allowing operators to monitor the system, adjust parameters, and receive alerts.

Other examples of automation elements include relays, timers, counters, and various types of communication modules. The integration of these individual elements allows for the creation of complex automated workflows in industries such as manufacturing, logistics, and process control. The development and standardization of automation elements have been crucial in driving efficiency, improving safety, and increasing productivity across a wide range of applications.
