Authentificatiemethoden refer to the processes and technologies used to verify the identity of a user, device, or system. The primary goal of authentication is to ensure that only authorized entities can access specific resources or perform certain actions. This is a critical component of information security, preventing unauthorized access, data breaches, and other malicious activities.

There are generally three main categories of authentication factors: something the user knows, something the user has, and something the user is. "Something you know" typically involves passwords or PINs. "Something you have" refers to physical items like security tokens, smart cards, or mobile devices receiving one-time codes. "Something you are" encompasses biometric authentication, such as fingerprint scans, facial recognition, or iris scans.

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) combines two or more of these independent categories to provide a more robust security layer. For instance, a user might need to enter a password (know) and then provide a code from their phone (have). This significantly reduces the risk of unauthorized access even if one factor is compromised.

Other authentication methods include single sign-on (SSO), which allows users to log in once to access multiple applications, and certificate-based authentication, which uses digital certificates to verify identity. The choice of authentication method often depends on the sensitivity of the data being protected, the user experience requirements, and the overall security posture of an organization. Continuous authentication is an emerging trend that involves ongoing verification of a user's identity throughout their session, rather than just at the initial login.
