Ausschnitzen

Ausschnitzen is a carving technique in which material is removed from a solid block to reveal a design, often by creating cut-out areas or a relief. The aim is to produce a figure, motif, or silhouette by removing the surrounding material, so that the subject stands out against a background or through negative space.

The method is commonly applied in wood carving but can also be used with stone, soapstone, or other carving media. Typical workflows include planning and transferring a design onto the surface, securely clamping the workpiece, and gradually removing material with knives, gouges, and chisels. Carving proceeds from rough to finer waste removal, paying attention to grain direction and natural flaws to avoid tear-out. Finishing steps involve smoothing with files or sandpaper and applying oil, wax, or varnish to protect and enhance the surface.

Tools and materials vary with the medium. In wood, common implements are detail knives, V-parting tools, fishtail gouges, and straight chisels. In stone, rasps, rifflers, and carbide or diamond tools may be used.
