Augenentzündungen, also known as conjunctivitis or pink eye, are common inflammatory conditions affecting the conjunctiva, the thin transparent membrane that covers the white part of the eye and the inner surface of the eyelids. They can be caused by a variety of factors, including infections, allergies, and irritants.

Infectious conjunctivitis is typically caused by viruses or bacteria. Viral conjunctivitis is highly contagious and often presents with watery discharge, redness, and a gritty sensation. Bacterial conjunctivitis can also cause redness and irritation, but it often produces a thicker, pus-like discharge that can cause the eyelids to stick together, especially upon waking. Allergic conjunctivitis is a reaction to allergens such as pollen, dust mites, or pet dander. Symptoms include itching, redness, watering, and swelling of the eyelids. Irritant conjunctivitis occurs when the eye comes into contact with substances like smoke, chemicals, or foreign particles, leading to redness and discomfort.

Diagnosis is usually made based on the patient's symptoms and a physical examination of the eye. In some cases, a sample of the discharge may be collected for laboratory testing to identify the specific cause. Treatment varies depending on the underlying cause. Viral conjunctivitis often resolves on its own within a week or two, with supportive care focusing on relieving symptoms. Bacterial conjunctivitis is treated with antibiotic eye drops or ointments. Allergic conjunctivitis is managed by avoiding the allergen and using antihistamine eye drops or oral medications. Irritant conjunctivitis is treated by removing the irritant and flushing the eye.
